First soul car!

Sort of related, trying to come up wiv somethin different!!
My first car was a Mk 1 Ford Cortina. I had a Phillips portable cassete player on the back seat playin my soul tapes and I had furry dice and sheepskin on the door panels. The car did not do much over sixty and took ages gettin anywhere, but woz my first opportunity to get out and visit different soul clubs throughout the south east without relying on Public Transport.

Re: First soul car!

Nice one ..mine was my dads Burnt Orange Hillman Avenger, with it's 'L' shaped light cluster at the rear ..after a short while I had it decked out with a 'top of the range'?? Harvard stereo radio cassette which when the volume was turned up used to sound like it's farting ..no furry dice I'm afraid but I was quite adept at getting the flow of the 'keep fit' wind up windows by getting the rhythm of 'circling my wrist so that they looked 'electric' ..Oh the memories!!

Jester.

Re: First soul car!

My first soulmobile was a Ford Escort MK1.

Chocolate brown with matching vinyl/plastic interior. Coat-hanger aerial. Non working demister so I was usully spotted driving with head out the window trying to see. Trebled the value of the car when I installed a Phillips stereo/tapedeck and speakers.

Non reclining seats so some gymnastic skills required when "dating". Oh the memories.....

Have good day.

Re: First soul car!

vauxhall victor fd series---bench front seat, the height of cool till it was taken on a trip--then you sort of developed a driving technique that involved wedging yourself up against the door, to stop sliding around. another design flaw-bench seat and floor mounted gear shift--hang on though, when 3 on the front seat, if it was a lady next to you plenty of opportunities when changing gears-lol.i also fitted the height of ICE some cheap n nasty (forerunner to amstrad maybe) tape player with crap parcel shelf speakers. still the old girl got me n mates down to the ilford lacy from northampton with no hassle so i shouldnt moan really-lol

Re: First soul car!

Ford Escort MK1 1300E.

I loved that car, 6 weeks after i bought it I was taking my girlfriend for a friday night spin around London ( not wise when you have bugger all driving experience ) missed a no entry sign, went up a one way street the wrong way, collided with a black cab and hit the wall of packed pub off Oxford St. The police took the car away, my girlfriend was whisked off in an ambulance and I was left on the pavement with some of the bar's clientelle.
How we laughed!!!

Do you think she'll remember me?

Re: First soul car!

Ford Cortina MK1 1600, with a 2000E gearbox, no air filter just a piece of cheese cloth reg no WWC 296 with a big eagle on the bonnet , Carlos fandango wheels dralon seats and a furry dash, later a few of us Souldiers had MGB’s very cool in the summer with a Audio Line casstte player with dancing lights.

Re: First soul car!

not mine but an old mates customized VW Beatle big fat wheels, raised wheel arches, exposed engine fluffy seats. Down side it leaked, 4 was a tight sweeze, no music & everywhere you when apart custom car runs you got pulled over by the old bill.
The old thing was never the same after someone loosened the wheelnuts one nite at the lacy & we came back through the dartford tunnel on 3 wheels after hitting the side wall & seeing the back tyre bouncing in front of us..happy days

Sad n it !

Re: First soul car!

Blue Metro, typical girl answer, can't remember engine size and stuff but it was blue. Anyhoo one Caister driving from Canvey to Purfleet (I know I was going the wrong direction to start but i was on my way to pick up Nats. I was happy doing 50 mph (top speed) listening to pre Caister tape, was feeling a tad warm so popped open the sun roof, half way down the old A13 the whole sun roof pop out. My greatest fear was if someone was behind me they'd have my sun roof on their dash board. Not one bit perturbed arrived at Nats house covered hole with black bin liner and went to Caister. Song that always reminds of that car. "Be Thankful for what you got". Replaces "Sunroof down", with "Sunroof GONE".

Re: First soul car!

Did anybody ever have a "diamond in the back"?

Re: First soul car!

Not my first car, but I remember sitting in the pub with Mortz and Norwich Martin after, no doubt, another City defeat and deciding on a whim to drive up to the Hadleigh Suite - just to hear "Too Much Lovemaking"! Bob Masters dj-ed that night.

All well until the gig ended and the Talbot Solara (I know, I know - it was inherited) ,EVW 366Y, decided to die on the way home - we ended up pushing it halfway to Yarmouth in the rain...nightmare stuff....

February 25th 1989 it was - the night of the first Tyson Bruno fight....

The things you do for soul music...

Re: First soul car!

My first Soul car (circa 1976) was a Purple Ford Corsair V4 (what a Funky Colour ). A whole crowd of us (certainly more than 5 people) used to climb into it and do the weekly journey every Friday from East London to Zero6 . I felt very proud thinking the car was the Mutts Nuts until 6 months later when it broke down just before Wickford with a cracked piston . Consequently we had to abandon the car and decided to thumb a lift to Zeros. Thankfully a kind elderly couple (they must have been nice to stop for us lot ) in their Morris Traveller stopped and gave us a lift.

So we got there in the end, and as luck had it I bumped into a mate who was going back to London. He agreed to give me a tow and take my mates home too. With that in mind we could all relax and enjoy ourselves and have a good time. Everything was cool until we left the club and got outside, only to discover that the autumn weather had got worse and fog had set in with visibility at around three feet . Imagine the journey home, being towed at 10 MPH from Southend to London, my face pressed up against the windscreen trying not to cause any damage to my mates Jag XJ6 . What a site , but we got home safely in the end - PHEW, what a nightmare.

Re: First soul car!

My mate had an Austin 1300 and when we went to the National soul day at Knebworth, we wrote it off.
He had never registered it and going from Knebworth to Crawley we ended up in the West end, so going down Haymarket we stopped at Macky Ds,I was in the passenger seat and opened the door and a car hit it and smashed the door and front wing in.
We drove allthe way to Crawley with me holding the door about 18 inches open.
Like you all say the things we done for soul.
But would we change a thing??????? Of course we would not
