Re: Soon to be Voyager Rider

Michael Lee
I am new to the Voyager world having purchased mine about 11 months ago. Just getting around to reviving her from the airport hanger where she sat for about 2 years. See pics on AVA (Name-Waterwalker). A couple of questions:
1- are there any Voyagers owners on LSV in the DFW area?
2- Are there any reputable Voyager mechanics in the DFW area...reputable meaning have been used before, or a known following for these bikes.

Thanks for the replies.

Unfortunately, no one on the current club roster is in the DFW area. Several of us are former Voyager owners who have done a lot of our own maintenance.

Re: Soon to be Voyager Rider

Michael, If it's been sitting for 2 yrs, I'm guessing that it's the Voyager ZG1200. We have (maybe - he's kind of quiet) one V12 rider in Springtown - NW of Ft Worth; Britt Lambert. And we have a Vulcan Voyager rider in Waco Larry Hartsel. These'd be the two closest to you.
But as PathFinder said [/quote]

-especially with regard to the 1986-2003 model V12, riders and ex-riders know more maintenance tricks than the guys at the Kaw shop. They literally can't properly change the oil on the old Voyager. Stay tuned to the AVA channel but ask questions here too. Not very many of us post but lots of us can help maintain your "new" bike.
Welcome to the fading world of Kaw Voyager.

Re: Soon to be Voyager Rider

Michael,

Welcome!!!! I guess I am the closest XII rider to you that is active in the LSV. (Just happen to be president) Congrats on your Voyager. Once you get it up and running, you will love it. I live in Marlin, just a little south on Waco. Need to change the oil first thing. Use Rotella 15-40 from Walmart. Exactly 3qts 22ozs. Don't worry about the oil sight glass. While at Walmart, buy a couple bottles of SeaFoam. It's about $7 per bottle. It says to use an oz per gallon but I would use a whole can in the first tank. Best thing you can do for a Voyager. AGM battery from Batteries+. About $100(mine was). Buy a battery tender. Probably need to change the tires to E3s. Other Voyager riders use other tires but E3s make it a sweet ride. Have any questions, call me 1-254-405-4465

Welcome again,

David Lawson(DeepSea)

Re: Soon to be Voyager Rider

Uh, don't forget the part about it having 2 oil drain plugs. Gotta remove them both to make room for that 3Q 22oz. So that's a total of 3 bottom-of-the-engine oil things to remove: The filter, the main plug, & the forward located don't-forget-it plug.

Re: Soon to be Voyager Rider

Thanks for the info. Most of that has been done. Carl Leo is sending me a bank of synched carbs. The bike idles well-no smoke, misses or leaks, sounds good, but dies when trying to increase rpm's. I can rich it out by placing a rag over air intake and the rpms will do fine. Smokes like a train as expected with the air restriction. Remove the rag and dies. I DO NOT REBUILD CARBS-not even small mower ones. (I learned my lesson on a quadrajet on the boat). Keeping air shocks for now-maybe progressives later. So far no leaks. Will get ALL the fluids changed. The prior owner had expendable income and took decent care of his stuff. The bike was kept in his airport hanger. Did buy a new battery 1st thing. Had a tender. So it's just a time and priority thing. My GF's dad lives in Salado and that will probably be my first extended short road trip...with her and her BIL in the car. Ha- her sister will ride with me. Go figure.
Thanks for the info and if your up around Dallas, Garland way give me a shout and we can shake hands and have a iced tea.

Re: Soon to be Voyager Rider

Your correct about the Kawa shops and older bikes. Asked one guy several questions and when he couldn't give answers I knew, it was time to leave. (he was in his 20's) Probably never worked on anything but crotch rockets. OK- so yes I have mechanical ability just not enough time in the day AND seems the Voyager is not a priority on any ones list but mine. Friends and family are more into our boating scene, where a lot of my time is spent. I do read AVA consistently. Learned so much. Thanks for the chat.
