Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

I just talked to David and Harold. Fortunately a slower speed collision on a wet road, not their fault. Sheila has multiple breaks of her right femur and has already had surgery. The surgery went well. She also has some fractures of her left tibia that are being addressed. David has some fractures of the tibia below his knee and is being observed before a course of action is decided upon. All in all it could have been much worse. Just thankful that they will heal. Harold managed to keep his bike upright and has no injuries.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Like everyone else, I hope they heal quickly. More importantly, I hope they don't have any long term consequences from the injuries. Based on information I gathered from a google search, a fractured femur can be very serious and take months to fully heal.

Their injuries sound rather severe for a low speed accident.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

They are discharging David today. Don’t know about Shelia yet. Will update as soon as I know more

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

In short. They were in a small town having lunch. Crossed a four-lane highway to go the opposite direction. A cager did something that created a chain reaction of the cars in front of them. Roads were wet. Cars were skidding trying to avoid colliding. Dave and Sheila ended up hitting one car and Sheila was catapulted over the car and landed on the road in front.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

David estimated around 25 to 30 miles an hour best guess. As opposed to freeway speeds.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

When Cindy2 (my facebook wife) told me about this, I thought she said Sheila's finger, & I thought -wow pretty lucky. But FEMUR! dang.
Be well Lawsons.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Dave is on a walker and hoteling with Harold.
They’re going over to hospital soon to check on Sheila.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

We are so sorry about Dave and Shelia, we can truly say that we know how they feel. We pray for a quick recovery.

Sandra & Jim

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

I think we are here in the hospital for another week. Then physical therapy here or home. They do have a physical therapy here and possibly a rehab. We will probably fly home, I don't think Sheila could deal with a 3 day road trip. Haven't got that far yet. Today is the first day Sheila will be out of bed since Friday. Sheila did break her right femur in two places and her left taiba near her ankle. A few other small things but those are the major ones. Thank you for all the prayers. Y'all are great

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

You are correct. I looked up recovery time on femur breaks. Any where from 6 to 12 months and taiba breaks from 4 6 months depending on the damage. So we are out of commission for a long while. But we are alive and healing.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Just left Sheila. She had a really great day. Ate breakfast and a little supper. Did PT. Did not sleep mom much of the day. I think we are making progress. God is good...

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

GOD IS GOOD.....all of the time! We are praying for you two.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Thank you, Bob and all of you.

Life is full of ups and downs. Yesterday was a pretty good day. Last night not so much. Replaced bandages. Doing PT today. She has more strength than she believes. Progress ever day.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Left Sheila this evening about 6p. She had worked hard today in PT. I think she has decided she is tired of hurting and knows the more she works the quicker she gets well. She will probably be accepted into the Wake forest medical rehab program. We will probably be here 3 to 6 months, maybe more. She can not put any weight on her right leg/femur for a minimum of 6 months. I am so proud of her determination to get well. God is Good

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Thank you tram for keeping the updates going. I know we are all praying for the Lawson’s for a speedy recovery.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Should of spell checked, I meant team.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Came in this morning to find Sheila off oxygen tube, no neck brace and ready to take on the world. Much improved over yesterday. Just waiting for her insurance to approve rehab. Probably will not move until Monday earliest. So proud of her for her determination.

Glad to hear things are looking up. The next few weeks will probably be the hardest.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Ditto.

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Sheila has decided to take charge of her therapy. She has a list of exercises the PT left her and we have done them twice and she is worn out. Taking a little nap now. Lots of pain and soreness to work out. She is a trooper

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Thx, Dave. We know. They are really work her in therapy

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Monday morning, waiting on insurance to approve rehab. Sheila had a busy day yesterday. OT came in in the afternoon and she almost stood up. Lots of pain. This morning we are working on range of motion for her legs. Everyday moving forward

Re: David and Sheila Lawson accident

Got to the hospital today and Sheila was bright eyed. Said she had a good night's sleep and felt refreshed. Ready for her exercises. Moving both knees well. Her attitude and appetite are very good. Moving forward.

Update on David and Sheila Lawson

For everyone that has been following Sheila and I after our accident. I banged my right knee up. Not enough to require surgery but will probably be in a brace for some months. A few observations. The simple joy of putting on both socks is a huge step. Leather gloves are a must being on a walker. The grips on walkers will eat your hands.
For Sheila, she has a right broken femur and a left broken taiba. Both have been repaired with rods. She has a boot on her left leg and will be able to walk on it. No pressure on her right leg for many months. Sheila is improving every day. Motion, ice and elevation are important for recovery. Any motion helps reduce pain. Any motion. Ice reduces the swelling and elevation gets the fluids moving.
Last, accept help. Don't take away someone's blessing by refusing their help. Don't be stubborn and do it yourself. You can't. Thank you, again

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

Good news, Sheila has been accepted into the acute rehab center in the hospital. She will be in the Sticht center. Her insurance decided to pay for her 2 week stay. Rm 363. Her spirits are up and looking forward to getting better.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

Much better today. In therapy at the Sticht rehab center. We have a plan and working the plan. Therapy for 7 to 10 days then evaluate. Thank you for your prayers.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

Hi, David & Sheila,
I am thankful that your accident was not any worse than it was, although a broken tibia is nothing to minimise. Sheila has the heart of a warrior, and Her positive attitude is her biggest asset. Bet ya she heals much faster than normal.
You are both in my prayers.
Ride Safe & Sane;
Hank S.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

Sheila is doing much better today. Set up on the side of the bed. Transferred to a chair with less pain than yesterday. Transferred back. Rested but didn't nap. Moving her legs and ready for the next step. Wheelchair.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

Sheila is much better today. Transferred today to a wheelchair and we made a tour of the rehab floor. She was in the chair almost an hour. She had to scoot into the chair. Tomorrow maybe she will stand and transfer.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

Thanks David for these daily updates. It helps knowing specifically what to pray for.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

Sheila had a good day yesterday. Wore herself out doing too much. Good news, therapists think she will improved enough to be discharged. Don't have a plan on what to do next. How to get home or stay here but working on it. Thank you for your prayers and cards. They have really lifted us.

Thanks, Bob. Healing for Sheila's knees and left lower taiba. Rods in both legs thru her knees. Right side from the knee to the hip and left from the knee to almost her ankle. Me, a fractured upper taiba, at the knee.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

Sheila is better every day. Text me this morning at 7.30 she was up, dressed, eaten breakfast and in her wheelchair ready to go to therapy. Working on getting her left leg stronger so she can support herself. She is amazing when she sets her mind to it.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

Scheduled discharge date is Jun 25th. We are looking at either ground or air transport back to Marlin that day or the day after. Sheila is better every day. Stood a couple of times yesterday. Stronger every day.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

That's so good to hear David. Our prayers continue.
Bob

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

Sheila is doing really well. Had several hours of PT and OT. She is getting stronger. Stood on her left leg and took a couple of steps. Her left leg is growing stronger every day. I think she will come home in a wheelchair, not walker. Looking like ground transport to Marlin. Ins says air is too expensive. I think we are ready no matter what. I am better. My knee is not as swollen. Still be wearing a brace. Better every day.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

That's really good news. Hang in there you two.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

So, we have some not so good news and some really good news. Not so good. Sheila's insurance has denied air transport because it's not a medical emergency. We were hoping they would but not today. Really good news, we have been in contact with an air transport company and the cost is less than originally thought. So through many generous people and money we have saved, we should be coming home this Friday or Monday depending on paperwork. We are just waiting on a final number and when. Thank you so much for your prayers, cards and support here and at home.

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

We made it home!! Got here about 10p. Got Sheila settled in her bed in the living room. Sorted some things then to bed. Today starts a day of learning how to live with my bum knee and her legs. It is really nice to be home and sleep in your own bed. Thank you to everyone that made this possible

Re: Update on David and Sheila Lawson

So now we have been a full week at home. Do miss the trees and cooler temps in NC but love being home. Thank you to everyone who helped last Friday night. We have Sheila's OT, PT and home health set up. They are all surprised how well Sheila is doing. We have been getting routines set up. Now, we have to plan trips from one end of the house to the other. With lots of patience and some help, we are getting it done. Thank you everyone for your help.

We have been praying for you guys from the day we first heard about it so we will continue to pray for you and Sheila
We love you guys and I know the good LORD is watching over you and Sheila.
