In Memory

From the Chicago Dispatcher, December 2008

In Memory
Industry mourns the loss of Dan Van Hecke, city's first Master Chauffeur.

Dan Van Hecke, winner of the city’s first Driver Excellence Award, has passed away. He was 65 years old.

According to close friend and fellow Master Chauffeur Joan Barnes, Mr. Van Hecke had dropped his cab Monday evening, December 1, as was walking to his personal car when he collapsed. A passerby administered CPR and called for an ambulance. Barnes said Van Hecke suffered a heart attack and was admitted to Our Lady of Resurrection Hospital, where he remained until he passed Thursday night, December 4.

“Dan was committed to the work,” Barnes said. “He believed in the wheelchair-taxi movement. He was a very kind-hearted and loving person. Whenever I needed help, he was there. I will miss him dearly.”
