Sacramento taxi driver: I fell asleep at the wheel

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ A Sacramento taxi driver who crashed his van into a tree, killing a passenger, says he fell asleep at the wheel after working for almost two days straight.

Alan Plante's van drifted off the road just before 6 a.m. Sunday, killing 56-year-old Wanda Hill.

Plante was driving Hill's husband to work at a local hospital, as he has done for several years. He said Hill's wife often accompanied him.

The driver said he did not know how many hours he was on the road before the crash, but he'd only taken "catnaps" since Friday.

State law bars taxi drivers from transporting passengers for more than 10 consecutive hours.

Police do not believe drugs or alcohol were involved.

Good idea to delay our raise. Now we can have drivers here working extra hours to try and make a living that could be made on fewer. I have always been amazed this doesn't happen more often.
