Swiss 'solar taxi' arrives home after world tour

ROOT, Switzerland (AP) – Swiss inventor Louis Palmer says he has completed a round-the-world trip in a solar-powered taxi without using a single drop of gas.

Palmer says he has returned to his hometown of Root in central Switzerland after 17 months on the road to promote climate-friendly technology.

Palmer estimated Thursday that he picked up around 1,000 passengers on the way, including U.S. talk show host Jay Leno, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon and former Dallas star Larry Hagman.

His two-seater taxi is powered by solar cells that it hauls on a trailer. Solar panels on a rooftop in the Swiss capital Bern also feed electricity into the grid, so Palmer can charge the batteries on rainy days without upsetting his zero carbon rule.
