P.G. cabdrivers plan strike to protest low fares

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) – Hailing a cab could be a problem in
Prince George's County.

Cabdrivers planned to strike starting at 6 a.m. Friday to protest fares that they say are too low. The rates are set by the county, and the drivers argue the rates are lower than in surrounding jurisdictions.

County officials told cab companies recently they no longer have permission to charge a $2 fuel surcharge that was authorized when gas prices were higher. The drivers say they can't live on the low fares. They want the fuel surcharge restored immediately.

Advocates working with the Prince George's County Taxi Workers Alliance were planning a Friday demonstration at the County Administration Building.

There are 700 cabdrivers in the county.
