Group offers free cab rides in DC on New Year's

WASHINGTON (AP) – Too drunk to drive home safely on New Year's? How about a free cab ride?

A local nonprofit will offer free taxi rides in the Washington area to "would-be drunk drivers" in the hopes of preventing alcohol-related traffic accidents.

SoberRide is sponsored by the Washington Regional Alcohol Program, which includes area law enforcement officials and business professionals, among other groups.

The SoberRide program will offer free trips (for fares up to $50) from 10 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. New Year's Day.

Those aged 21 and older can call 800-200-TAXI (8294) for the service.

Rides will be available for those in D.C. and the counties of Montgomery, Prince George's, Arlington, Fairfax, eastern Loudoun and Prince William.
