Gary-area paratransit bus service ends

GARY, Ind. (AP) – A dial-a-ride and paratransit bus service for elderly and disabled northern Lake County residents has stopped running, citing a lack of funding.

Northwest Indiana Community Action Corp. parked its 23 buses on Jan. 31.

Executive Director Gary Olund says he feels terrible about the end of the service, which helped residents of Gary and surrounding communities get to the doctor, to work or to the store. The bus service's staff has also been laid off.

The agency announced last fall that it would stop the bus service when it learned that it would not receive funding from local governments. Olund says he hopes the shutdown will prompt local and state officials to provide adequate funding for public transportation in northwestern Indiana.

This does apply to us in one way. We should be thankful that we still have jobs and can earn wages, ever if the terms are not fare to us. Sorry I couldn't resist the pun......
