Man gets 45 years in prison for killing SC cabbie

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) – A 22-year-old man has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for killing a Spartanburg taxi driver in a shootout two years ago.

The Herald-Journal of Spartanburg reports that a jury found William Lee guilty Tuesday of murder and attempted armed robbery. Lee was sentenced to 35 years for murder, and will then serve 10 years in prison for the attempted robbery charge.

Prosecutors say Lee and a co-defendant tried to rob 55-year-old Harvey Wells as he washed his taxi in January 2007.

Authorities say Wells and the suspects got into a shootout.

Lee's lawyer says he was not armed during the robbery.

The co-defendant, 23-year-old Darell Ray, testified against Lee. Ray pleaded guilty to the same charges and is awaiting sentencing.

Sounds like the driver that was killed was also packing. Wonder what would have happened if the driver had surrendered and just threw his money at these two?
