Taxi commissioner: Credit card passengers are better tippers

NEW YORK (AP) - A city official says passengers in taxis
equipped with credit card machines are better tippers.

Taxi and Limousine Commissioner Matthew Daus says cash
passengers typically tip 10 to 15 percent, while credit card
customers average 22 percent.

The Taxi Workers Alliance contends that proposed GPS and
credit-card systems not only invade driver privacy but cut drivers'
incomes.

But the taxi commissioner says that, even after the transaction
fee, drivers are left with a 16 percent tip.

The alliance has called for an Oct. 22 strike over the issue of
credit card and GPS technology.

Salim Abunassar: The better tips that credit card users may give are more than offset by time it takes to process them, the charges taken by the cab companies and banks, and the tickets drivers are written for taking too long to unload.

Hi,

Credit card customers are not always good tippers, the few cards that was processed by me was a disester.
It is wrong for the city to mandate that all cab drivers accept cards, this is wrong, the drivers must be allowed to make this decision since this very much affects their income.

Of cause it is wrong. It would be more wrong when you process the credit when you are not even the Merchant's Account owner.

Do you know where the money is transfering to when passenger pays you the fare by a credit card? If it goes to the cab company's account, it would be like you cash your pay-check from a "currency exchange".
