Skokie offers cab drivers parking at town lots

SKOKIE, Ill. (AP) - The Chicago suburb of Skokie has passed an ordinance that allows the drivers to keep their taxis on uncovered parking pads behind their homes and in seven municipal parking lots.

However, the ordinance bans the parking of taxis on residential streets, prompting some drivers to say that a threatened discrimination lawsuit is on hold but not necessarily dead.

Cabdriver and Skokie resident Michael Decker says the drivers are holding off suing because of the Village Board's efforts to find some alternatives for cabdrivers.

The ban on parking taxis on residential streets was crafted after several residents complained they were eyesores.

The objections coincided with complaints from police that too many cabs were violating the city's one-cab-per-block exception to a ban on all commercial vehicles in residential areas.
