NYC taxi commission votes for 311-dispatched accessible cabs

NEW YORK (AP) - For New York City's disabled riders, a cab ride may be just a phone call away starting next year.

The Taxi and Limousine Commission voted Tuesday to create a two-year pilot program that would allow disabled callers to call 311 for an accessible taxi.

The Disabled Riders Coalition praised the decision but also called it an interim step toward mitigating the lack of accessible vehicles in the city.

The group has called for a fully accessible taxi and for-hire vehicle fleet.

Another disabled riders' advocacy group, Taxis for All Campaign, believes the program is flawed because there are few accessible cabs in the city.

While there are 13,000 medallion taxicabs, only 80 are wheelchair accessible.
