Who Said The Truth Will Set You Free?

"The truth will set you free" is such a commonly used phrase, today.

Many would consider it one of the great laws of life. Only those who study the bible have any idea where it came from.

Even people who don't believe in Jesus, believe in this, not knowing the source.

One of the most fascinating things about reading the Bible, for me, was discovering how many phrases in our modern English originated in the Bible, thousands of years before.

A popular TV program is about an F.B.I. agent who seeks the truth. The phrase "the truth is out there" flashes on the screen at the beginning of many episodes.

In the U.S. court, a witness swears to tell "the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth." Then they lie up a storm.

As a country, we were more upset with our former President for lying to us, than for all the other things he was accused of.

I don't have time to list those things, but you may remember a couple.

After a while, we get the idea that truth is pretty important to us.

Still, how can the truth set us free? And, free from what? How many of you believe that truth will set you free? Go ahead and raise your hand? Wow, that's almost all of you.

Are you sure? I'm really just sitting in my office and can't see your hands, so you can put them down, now.

What if I were to tell you that the statement, "The truth will set you free." Is not true?

That's why we're studying it, because that is what Jesus was clearly teaching…There is a condition to be met before we can be free.

To be free, we must know the truth: After Sep 11, everyone in the World knew there was a conspiracy to take jumbo jets and use them as giant flying bombs.

This thing had been planned for years. The truth existed for years, but it did us no good.

If truth, by itself, could have helped us, the attacks would have been prevented. We had to know the truth to prevent the attacks.

Truth, by itself, can't free us.

After reading the whole story in John 8, we know that Jesus was sitting there telling these people the truth, but they were unwilling to know and accept the truth.

Jesus predicted the end result was that they would die as slaves to their sin, all because they were unwilling to know the truth.

Many of the people who write to the cabmarket.com discussion forum, never accept the truth that's given back to them.

Maybe because it's too hard, or embarrassing, or requires a change they're not willing to make. I don't know why.

I just know they don't accept it. But, because they don't accept the truth, they continue enslaved to their problems.

We have to know truth for it to help us. To be free, we must know the truth.

To know the truth, we must be like disciples: This is an interesting condition to knowing the truth; we must be disciples of the truth.

What makes this interesting is what the word disciple means. Most people would say it means "student", and that's partially true.

That's the most common definition today, but what did it mean when Jesus said it, to the people He said it to? If we really want to understand the truth, those are the kinds of questions we need to ask.

A disciple learns what the Master teaches, like a student, but it doesn't stop there. A disciple eats what the Master eats, sleeps where the Master sleeps, does what the Master does, and does what the Master says.

Disciples conform their lives to the life of the Master. Instead of "student", "follower" would be a better English word for disciple.

Students are about studying and learning. Followers are about doing and being.

It's clear what Jesus means, by the next condition He sets for freedom. You see, to be free, we must know the truth, and to know the truth, we must free ourselves of preconceptions, notions and opinions.

To follow the way of truth, we must live the truth: This is one huge condition. What does it mean to live in the truth? I believe it means at least two things.

Many people are happy having someone else do all the heavy lifting when it comes to studying the truth.

They sit in church pews or in front of radios, TV's and computers, and think they're getting the truth.

All they're really getting is someone else's opinion of the truth. Listen to me! If you're reading this, you're only getting my opinion of the truth.

To live in truth, and have truth living in us, we must hear truth, read truth, study truth, meditate on truth, memorize truth, and do truth.

I didn't make that up. It's what “His Word” says. We must live our lives in truth, having truth living in us.

The book of John captures some things about Jesus the other gospels leave out.

It describes Jesus as the "Word." Look at John 1:1 "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God." The Word was a term used commonly at that time to mean God; it means "the Divine expression" or ultimate Truth.

The "Truth" was a name Jesus gave to Himself, as recorded in John. I believe Jesus used these very words so we would understand that truth is more than study, and reading and holding to some doctrine or someone’s opinion.

It's more than learning and doing. That's all necessary for growth in truth, but living in truth is more than that.

It's about being! Paul wrote, 'I've been crucified with Christ, I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.' Jesus often said things in "code" not only to confuse and anger those He was speaking to, but also to make a Spiritual point to His true followers.

It is not enough to just listen to the truth and fool ourselves, but to live the truth.

Re: Who Said The Truth Will Set You Free?

Read John 8:32 in the Holy Bible. That's where you'll find the truth will set you free.

You'll feel closer to God when you decide to go to church.

e: Re: Re: Thank you, COURAGE to RESPECT and DEFEND the TRUTH!
Name: John
Date Posted: Dec 19, 07 - 11:06 PM
Message: John 8:31-32 "Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

I never post lies about other people, especially if I think the truth will do more damage.

The truth will set you free, but first it will make you miserable.

Think you know what you're doing?

Think again. You don't know half the story.

And when you learn it, you'll realize that what you don't know CAN hurt you.

Can you say pat-sy?

Re: Re: Re: Who Said The Truth Will Set You Free?

Hello John,

I like what you posted. This tells me that you're on the good side of the Lord.

Re: Re: Re: Who Said The Pope Said You Are Brain Dead

For the guy who likes to tell others to read the bible, here's the Holy Trinity for numb-sculls:

(1) Get a brain.
(2) Learn to read.
(3) Learn to think.

---

NIV translation:

John 8
31
To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.
32
Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free."
33
They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free

From the King James version:

8:31 Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;
8:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.
8:33 They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou *, Ye shall be made free?

From The New American Standard:

John 8:31
So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine;

John 8:32
and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

John 8:33
They answered Him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, 'You will become free'?"

From The Revised Standard Version:

John 8
31
Jesus then said to the Jews who had believed in him, "If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples,
32
and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."
33
They answered him, "We are descendants of Abraham, and have never been in bondage to any one. How is it that you say, 'You will be made free'?"

Address of John Paul II on Brain Death 2000
In the Address of John Paul II below, you will find the designation of brain death as the sign that is purported to give “moral certainty” that a person has, indeed, died. Death is understood in this papal address as “the total disintegration of that unitary and integrated whole that is the personal self.” Brain death as criterion “for ascertaining death used by medicine today should not be understood as the technical-scientific determination of the exact moment of a person’s death, but as a scientifically secure means of identifying the biological signs that a person has indeed died.”

The decisive center of the papal address is the supposition that the scientific community has ascertained that “the total disintegration of that unitary and integrated whole that is the personal self” takes place when there is “the complete and irreversible cessation of all brain activity (in the cerebrum, cerebellum and brain stem). This is then considered the sign that the individual organism has lost its integrative capacity.”

In a word, the irreversible cessation of all brain activity signifies that the body no longer has the ability to be an integrated organism. The previous posting of Dr. Alan Shewmon purports to clinically show the exact opposite. And since “the Church does not make technical decisions,” it is important for every informed mind to be open to the clinical facts concerning the relation between complete and irreversible “brain death” and the somatic integration as organism. The latter is the undisputed “sign” of “that unitary and integrated whole that is the personal self.”

Better start saying your prayers boy. Quit jacking off while visiting all those porno sites, you'll go blind and your brain will rot.
