Newest council member credits cabbie for election win

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Oklahoma City's newest elected official credits a taxi driver and an elderly lady with helping him land a seat on the city council.

The polls were about to close on an icy Dec. 11 election day when attorney Skip Kelly said he got a call from the granddaughter of Lulla Johnson, 77. The woman said her grandmother wanted to vote for Kelly, but couldn't get out in the ice.

Kelly said he immediately called a taxi driver.

``I told the taxi cab driver: 'I don't care what you do or how much it may cost me, but there is a lady that lives over on Lottie and she needs to go vote and I want her at the polls before 7 o'clock,'' Kelly said.

The **>cabbie<** succeeded, and a recount showed Kelly won the primary election by one vote over his three opponents.

``We still consider Miss Lulla Johnson the one vote that put us over,'' Kelly said.

When Kelly was sworn into his Ward 7 seat on Wednesday, he had Johnson stand and be recognized.

Re: Newest council member credits cabbie for election win

This is actual value cabdrivers can bring to the table right here in Chicago or practically anywhere else in America.

Checker drivers used to bring voters to polling stations as a contribution to candidates they supported.

Mike Foulks has suggested this kind of action more recently.

Is anybody interested in putting some sort of program like this together to help cab-friendly candidates?
