Measure would require low-emission taxis in San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) _ San Francisco taxi companies will be
required to convert their fleets to hybrids and other low-emission vehicles by 2012 under a measure approved by the city's Board of Supervisors.

The ordinance approved by city officials on Tuesday would codify into law a measure passed by the city taxi commission that requires cab companies replacing their cars to do so with low-emission vehicles.

The measure still needs the board's approval next week in a
second vote and the mayor's signature to become law.

In December, New York's Taxi and Limousine Commission adopted a new fuel efficiency rule that requires all cabs purchased after Oct. 1 to get at least 25 miles per gallon.
