Judge delays start of meter system for D.C. cabs

WASHINGTON (AP) – D.C. cabdrivers have won more time to press their court fight against the planned switch from zone-based fares to meters.

A Superior Court judge pushed back the start date for the meters from April 6 to May 1 after ruling Tuesday that the District government had published different timetables for public comment on regulations governing the meter system.

Interim D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles says a typographical error was to blame for the conflicting information.

The cabdrivers are challenging Mayor Adrian Fenty's authority to set rules and rates for the meter system. The suit contends the Taxicab Commission was left out of the decision-making process.

A hearing is scheduled for March 27.
