Portland proposes requiring GPS devices in city taxis

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – Cabs in Portland would have to be equipped with global positioning system devices under a proposal under consideration in Maine's largest city.

An amended draft of the city's 28-page taxi ordinance would mandate that the city's taxis have the GPS devices by May 2009.

The rules would also require that taxis be no more than 10 years old and prohibit smoking in the cabs at all times. At the same time, cab fares would be allowed to go up to help drivers make a profit as gasoline prices rise.

The City Council is expected to review and vote on the proposals in April or May.
