Baltimore taxi company adds hybrids to fleet

BALTIMORE (AP) - A Baltimore taxicab company is going green by adding Toyota Prius hybrids to its fleet.

On Friday morning, Yellow Transportation dispatched its first hybrid taxi from the Remington neighborhood to City Hall to pick up Mayor Sheila Dixon.

The company has two hybrid cabs now, but operations manager Andre Taylor says Yellow Transportation eventually hopes to put more than 200 hybrids on city streets. The taxis have a distinct green-and-yellow paint scheme that distinguishes them from the company's 700 yellow cabs.

Company officials say the cars get about 48 miles per gallon. Cab driver Joe Matthews says that translates into $150 a week in fuel cost savings.
