Hate Sentence - WA man who attacked taxi driver in hate crime is sentenced

SEATTLE (AP) - A 21-year-old Kent man who attacked a Seattle taxi driver and called him an ``Iraqi terrorist'' has been given a nine-month sentence.

Luis Arturo Vazquez pleaded guilty on March 21 to second-degree assault and malicious harassment, a hate crime, for the Nov. 24 attack.

Cabbie Sukhvir Singh suffered a concussion, facial cuts, bite marks on his scalp and other injuries. Court documents say Vazquez was drunk and had been kicked out of the Apple Cup football game at Husky Stadium when police saw Singh's cab and asked him to give the man a ride home.

Vazquez will be allowed to serve his jail time on work-release. As part of Friday's sentencing, he also was ordered to perform 240 hours of community service.
