Gas prices are affecting suburban cab drivers, too.

The Arlington Heights village board approved taxi fare increases for the first time in 10 years on Monday. The first-mile fee will go from $2.40 to $4, and each additional mile will go from $1.40 to $2. Additional passengers will cost $1 instead of the old rate of 25 cents per person, according to a village memo.

The increases will affect every taxi ride that begins in Arlington Heights. 303 Taxi, a cab company based in Mount Prospect, asked Arlington Heights officials to raise the rates based on increasing gasoline prices, said Village Manager Bill Dixon.

Arlington Heights is one of the few suburban municipalities that controls taxi fares, said Robin Ward, assistant village attorney. Schaumburg is the only other suburb around with similar control, she said.

"I'm not exactly sure when it started but I've been with the village for 20 years and it's been on the books as long as I can remember," said Ward before Monday's board meeting.

Most suburbs including Buffalo Grove, Palatine, Barrington and Des Plaines allow taxi companies to set their own rates.

Regardless of who has control, pretty much all suburban taxi rates have increased in the past year.

According to Buffalo Grove Deputy Village Manager Ghida S. Neukirch, 303 Taxi notified Buffalo Grove rates were increasing in April 2007 -- the cost of the first mile went from $2.80 to $4. Additional miles went from $1.80 to $2.

Schaumburg raised their taxi rates in February, due to "cost of living increases, including the price of gasoline," according to Village Manager Ken Fritz.

Cab fares in Chicago were increased in May.
