Reader Opinions

Dear Commissioner Reyes:

Your letter in the Chicago Dispatcher, July 16, 2008 edition, tells me that you don't know from where the taxicab drivers are coming.

You think we're making big money – we're not! Cabdrivers were making money before Mayor Daley took over. It's time for some new political leaders in Chicago. The city needs leaders who'll have more compassion for the Chicago taxicab drivers, instead of punishing them with heavy fines and rules and regulations that are against the cabdrivers.

You mentioned re-positioning the industry from a cash-base to a cashless system.

1.) Do you think drivers are able to buy gasoline using credit card receipts signed from the passengers who paid with credit cards? We need cash to pay for gasoline.

2.) Do you think cabdrivers have less chances of getting robbed if they only accept credit cards? Someone robbing a cabdriver doesn't want to hear the driver saying only credit cards are accepted. Either the driver hands a robber cash, or the driver gets blown away.

3.) When a cabdriver's work is done for the day, how is the driver able to purchase groceries and pay bills using credit card receipts signed by passengers?

When I met with you at an October 23, 2007 hearing, I did tell you to drive a cab for a week and see for yourself how much money a cabdriver really makes. You should take advantage of it, than you'll know for sure where the cabdrivers are coming from.

How about getting blown away on camera without a shield. This is Normas great idea. Jody Weis and Co. might even catch the guy. Don't worry, your life will end but the bad guy will get prison. You'll get a free body bag too! What a deal!

Camreas do not prevent some crazed drugged up guy from killing you, protective shields do. Cameras are best for catching shoplifters or cheaters in a casino. Sure Norma wants to help us, help us get killed!

George, does this truthful opinion qualify me for banishment?
