NG-TC V8 Battery Location

Rocket is on the verge of having a complete rewire.
Currently the battery is mounted on the scuttle under the bonnet.
I am tempted to resite the battery back into the moulded box behind the passenger seat. Does anyone have any thoughts on the advisability of this ?
I am concerned that the extended cable length and (presumeably) high cranking current of a V8 might make this unwise. - Chris

Re: NG-TC V8 Battery Location

I have a v8 tc but i have moved my battery to the front scuttle as i couldn't get a battery to fit in the small battery tray behind the seats
also my auto electrician friend said there would be a voltage drop by using such a long cable from battery to starter
another benefit by being under the bonnet is its easy access

Re: NG-TC V8 Battery Location

Hi Chris and Su,
Thanks for your support with the SE meet on the 24th.

Regarding your battery position, although not a V8 my early TF had the battery in the rear in the GRP moulding and was a real pain!

The long thick wires running through the car, only being able to use a very small battery, unless you go for the old style MGB twin linked six volt opption. SC Parts still do this but it is fairly expensive and harder to do in an NG than the original MGB/GT.

Also as previously posted the volts drop from the long cable(s) to the starter won't help cranking the V8 on a cold day! If there is room under the bonnet I would stick to this option - PERHAPS have a box let into the scuttle/bulkhead to lower the profile of the battery under the bonnet.
Also I never feel safe with a battery in the cockpit area; although more modern gel type batteries help with this and an enclosed battery box could be obtained/made.

Best Regards Rob

Re: NG-TC V8 Battery Location

Hi Mel & Rob - thank you both for your thoughts and all very valid.
I was prompted to think of this purely to ease congestion on the scuttle but there are clearly far more cons than pros - so I will probably leave well alone - Thanks Chris

Re: NG-TC V8 Battery Location

Wisdom says no, but I relocated the battery to the boot of the TC as it was used in competition. All I can say is I never had any problems with cranking.
Why are you tempted to do it?

Re: NG-TC V8 Battery Location

Hi Chris, As you know I am rewiring my TF V8 at the moment. I have left it with the battery in the back. A bit of a pain to get in and out but have managed to route the cable through the tub along side the prop tunnel reasonably neatly. I have used standard cable glands from Wickes for entry and exit to the tub to protect, seal and keep things neat. With the carpet in you wouldn't know it was there. In the back keeps it out the way in my opinion and if it is cold enough to prevent the engine turning over then the car is staying in the garage. The heat from the engine can't do the battery any good really can it in such a small engine bay?

Regards

Paul
