ALittle Local Knowledge

Hi NG'ista's
I seek a mechanic in Herts area who can do some tecchy stuff to NiGella, such as recalibrate speedo, sort out fuel pick up, recalibrate temperature gauge.
Anyone know anyone?
Cheers
BJ

Re: A Little Local Knowledge

Hi Brian,

Speedy cables seem like the ideal candidates for recalibrating your speedo and temperature gauge.

As for the fuel pick-up problems. As you say, drain the tank and take the brass outlet fitting out to see what is there. A simple fix could be to get a length of fuel resistant rubber pipe of the correct diameter and slide it over the end of the existing pickup pipe.

As always there are three very important things to take into consideration when working on petrol tanks. They are safety, safety and safety. Petrol can be nasty stuff if it gets on the skin or in cuts!! Not wishing to teach you how to suck eggs but once alight petrol will be very difficult to extinguish, so precaution is better than cure.

Good luck and hope to see you at the national rally when we can discuss in detail.

Regards

Paul

Re: ALittle Local Knowledge

Hi Brian

I am a bit suspicious that your problems are the result of the voltage stabilizer being faulty. Both instruments run at a little less than the usual 12 volts (9 volts seems to ring a bell). If both temperature gauge and petrol gauge are reading higher than you would expect, check the voltage on the supply wire, ie not the lead to the sender, if the voltage is 12 volts the stabilizer will be the problem. These units are usually trouble free but can give rise to problems if not correctly earthed. This is simple to do on the donor vehicle as the unit is mounted to the metal bodywork, on our cars simply mounting the unit to the fibreglass will not provide the necessary earthing so a seperate lead is required to bond the casing of the unit to earth. This is far easier than delving into the petrol tank electrics only to find that all is well.

Happy NGing
