Distributors Mechanical or Electronic

Hi
I've been struggling with an interesting situation with Nigella
She got a 4 cyl 2 l Ford Pinto with mechanical Distributor. Circa 92
Gotta a problem the contact breaker (aka points) have started to fail very quickly , about 100 miles
New points (aka contact breaker) Engine runs sweet, timing perfect, then gap closes it seems due to the bakalite post wearing down and gap closes eventually to zero
No wear on the cam, well greased,
Points (Lucas) seem well over heated and burnt too quickly
Distr is Bosch maybe Granada, coil could be for an Electronic District
So

Anyone come across this before - its a new one on me
Which better switch to electronic distributor,
Change Coil for a mechanical compatible (if so which make/model)
This problem has only started since I put a new set of points in cos the old ones which had done a few thousand miles were starting to look a bit pitted maybe should have left well enough alone
Ideas?
B:-)
