Re: Pre SVA TA steering column

The MGB based cars had two u shaped brackets one on the upper vertical face, the other on the horizontal face.

I have replaced my MGB column with a Rover SD1 column that uses a modified original Rover bracket that holds the column at the top near the wheel and a bracket where the column goes through into the engine bay, sorry no pictures.

My logic was the further apart the brackets, the less shake I would get.

Re: Pre SVA TA steering column

Thanks Malc. I will have to investigate further and see just where the movement is coming from. The wheel does not move a lot when stationary and trying to shake it manually, but on the move all bumps and ripples are transmitted to the wheel and it shudders and moves from side ti side. All nuts and bolts appear tight, so it could just be it needs another U bracket, or the cross arm supporting/strengthening.

Re: Pre SVA TA steering column

Just a thought…

the MGB and Midget column has s a crappy piece of fibre matting inside that dries up - they need to be oiled every now and then - does your column have the same ? Because you might get away with just 'refilling' the mat

Re: Pre SVA TA steering column

Yes, there is a white piece of fibre with tapered ends. I think it has to be soaked in oil, so it will compress enough to slide it in the tube. I have not plucked up courage to try it yet, due to lack of space, mass of wires, and messy job, but I suppose I will have to give it a go. I really think it is down to lack of support, just where to fit it, is my problem. Obvious place is somewhere near the steering wheel end of the column, but that means drilling holes in the scuttle.
