oil pump locking camshaft

Hi everyone, I've come across a weird thing regarding oil pumps for an MY 18v engine. I ordered a new one as part of the engine overhaul that fitted fine and was for a 5 bearing crank model but when it was torqued up correctly it jammed the camshaft. Iftook it out and re-fitted the original and the camshaft turned around fine. I sent the pump back and ordered another and the same happened again. as an experiment I took the pump from a scrap 1976 Marina 1.8 and yet again, upon tightening the oil pump the camshaft locked when the pump bolts were tightened The pump bodies are all identical but the slotted shaft on the end of the impeller on my original pump sits about 1mm lower than all the other pumps. Ideas desperately needed so I can finish assembling the engine which now has new shells but no oil pump. Helllllllp lol

If you don't get a response from anyone here, I suggest you try https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/MG-MGB/info there are some knowledgeable members in that group. That of course doesn't mean that there aren't knowledgeable people on this forum!!

Not direct knowledge or experience of this problem but could you file the extra length off the new pump?

hi and thanks for the input. it seems that this problem is not unheard of with some pumps that are made other than in the UK, especially for MG owners in the US. it seems to be the impeller shaft that is longer. If I could post pictures I'd be able to show you. Have ordered another more expensive pump. The 1st two, despite being from different retail outlets were from the same ssupllier as far as I can tell.
