TF Windscreen frame.

Hello.

Just about thinking about beginning work on my Henley

I have an original frame - the thin 3/4" extruded aluminium type - but really want something a bit meatier, tho' stopping short of the expense of the new cast/chrome type (not that it would fit anyway, as the Henley is around 4" wider than standard TFs)

I've found a company that'll make up a frame to my requirements for a very reasonable sum. My initial thoughts were: ali sheet (min 3mm thick) folded to give a 'U' profile of outside dimensions 30x50x30mm, and then bent (actually, the corners would have to have triangular sections cut from them to allow folding, then welded) to provide the overall frame shape. The company will do all this, and polish the ali (or give it a brushed finish), for less than £100 delivered - I thought that was pretty good.

Since it will be a bespoke design, I am now looking at whether the frame uprights should be completely vertical, or slightly slopping inwards towards the top when viewed from the front. I think my best design cue would be from the new cast TF frame, but I've yet to see a photo from the front!

Can anyone tell me if the windscreen frame sides are vertical, or by how much they slope inwards?

Any other thoughts on the shape to go for?

Many thanks.

Re: TF Windscreen frame.

Hello Donnie,

It's a bit difficult to be precise because the current TF windscreen doesn't have a clear sharp angle or edge to measure from. If you are not chasing the micron and are happy with brush stroke figures, then when viewed from the front of the car each edge of the screen reduces by approx 1" as it rises, giving a 2" reduction overall.

Kind regards, John

Re: TF Windscreen frame.

Thanks very much, John - that's very helpful.

Can I tackle you on another point now?! It would be useful for me to know the overall height of your screen and frame (very envious, by the way...), from the bodywork to the very top edge, at around the middle of whole thing.

Ok, I'm going to push my luck further - could you also tell me the approx dimensions of the actual frame section itself (width and depth) - I was looking at using a 'U' channel of around 30x50x30, but this might be too large, thinking about it.

Cheers, John - really apprecaite your help.

Re: TF Windscreen frame.

Oh, and... (!!!)

When you look along the top of your frame, does it have a slight curve in it (ie: higher in the middle), or is it completely flat?

Thanks again - I think that's it!

Cheers.

Re: Re: TF Windscreen frame.

Donnie,
The windscreen rakes back. I set my windscreen as per Page 70 of the manual, and that says 460mm approx measured from the centre of the top front lip of the screen frame to the edge of the scuttle (i.e. where the metal bonnet meets the fibreglass tub). Mine ended up at 465mm.
Yes, the windscreen curves down to the sides slightly when viewed from the front. Another dimension impossible to measure accurately due to the radiused corners and no sharp edges to use. I've just checked, and it seems to drop about 10mm (very roughly) either end.

Kind regards, John

Re: TF Windscreen frame.

Thanks, John. Very helpful indeed.

The only part I'm not sure about is the height of the actual screen - as I don't have the build manual for that model (mine's an old Henley), the 460mm measurement doesn't mean much to me I'm afraid.

Is it possible to confirm the overall height for me, please - in the middle of the screen from where it touches the scuttle to the very top of the frame?

Many thanks.

Re: Re: TF Windscreen frame.

Hello Donnie,

Mine measures 295mm.

Please come back if you need any more,
John

Re: TF Windscreen frame.

Thanks John. That's brilliant.

Re: Re: TF Windscreen frame.

Hi John!

Can I ask you to give me an idea of the actual frame sectional size, please - ie: when you look at the frame from the side, how wide is it, and how deep is the return towards the glass? Blimey, I'm confusing myself here... What I mean is, if you were to cut through your frame uprights, what would the outside dimensions of the section (roughly) be ?! I'm worried about going for something too hefty-looking.

Honestly, no need to actually cut your frame...

Many thanks.

Re: Re: Re: TF Windscreen frame.

Sorry Donnie, but I only looked at the most recent threads and hadn't realised you'd asked another question.

My chrome over brass windscreen channel outer section dimensions are 20mm x 15mm thick.

The profile is rather like an I-Beam where the internal recess accepts the glass (or outer uprights or hood or rubber under.)

You owe me £1200 quid as I read the bit about not hacksawing the metalwork too late.

Have fun, as stuff you do yourself is so much more rewarding than buying ready made.

Re: Re: Re: Re: TF Windscreen frame.

G-g-g-gulp! Ch-ch-ch-cheque is in the post.

Many thanks - a much more slender profile than I'd imagined. I'd better not over-do mine then!

As you say, DIY-ing is very rewarding; the fact that the WHOLE car cost me just £1200 is another reason
