I love the how to deal with the different challenges you can have with adopting an older puppy.

Do you have any comments?

We adopted a 9 month old 100lb Doberman puppy. Walking him was more like him walking me. I read your advise on "loose leash" training. After a day he had the idea and after practicing for a few days, he is a dream to walk with! Thank you for your web advise.

From your website >>I<< learned how to "become a tree" which then helped my dog (a rat terrier named Mandy) learn to walk at MY pace, not hers.

Do you have any comments?

I was worried that I wouldn't have the patience to follow through with the program and our 1st day's walk did take about 3 times longer, but by the 2nd day it was just like Helen Keller learning to spell and understand W-A-T-E-R for the 1st time. Mandy still tests me from time to time, but I always "become a tree" again and we move right along. Now be are BOTH enjoying our walks together. Thanks from Mandy and me. :-)

Do you have any comments?

They call themselves "trainers". You train to sit and stay. Pat TAUGHT us. She knew the right partner for me even when I thought Monty was just wrong. The best move I ever made going to her for help. The best four legged son and life saver a guy could hope for. Thank you.

I got her while she was around 1 and have some difficulty as the previous owners did some damage and now she is a very nervous and hand shy dog. She is great though but I am trying to retrain her with some difficulty. She regresses very quickly. I will continue to use this site to assist us.

I have a (just) 10 month old de-sexed Labrador Golden x Retriever, he is the love of my life and well trained for his age. Lately he has been 'strange', after reading your article about dogs this age I now know he's not "lost the plot", it's normal and I will be able to work through it. Thanks so much for your site, Trish from Australia

What a wonderfully informative web site!

I am currently developing a volunteer program for our local animal shelter. The volunteer program that is in place at this time has a lack of instruction, direction and organization. I have combed the Internet in search of resources that we can utilize in our on-site volunteer program, off-site adoption days, and foster care program. I am so very grateful to have found your site with it's wealth of information.
I intend to utilize the information that you have provided in training our volunteers (particularly your knowledge on body language, so that our volunteers will be safe and successful in approaching one of our many shelter dogs).
Our volunteers will have the opportunity to visit your site during orientation Unfortunately we are located in East Tennessee or we would be visiting your facility in groups.

Keep up the GREAT work!

We are a nonprofit animal shelter and any material used will comply with your copyright rules.

We will also refer adopters to your website in order to help them be successful with their adopted dogs!

THANK YOU
Lora G./East Tennessee

Do you have any comments?

I run a big discussion board on cavalier king charles spaniels -- cavaliertalk.com -- and also run Irish Cavalier Rescue here in Dublin. Two of my best friends run a dog training school, dogtrainingireland.com with very much the same philosophy as you and that has influenced how I manage and home dogs and run my board. :)

I refer people to your site so often -- especially the wonderful articles on dog body language and advice for parents about dogs and kids -- that I just wanted to say thanks for having such a comprehensive resource available. I have just a few sites that I refer people to with confidence where they aren't lectured in dominance, told to punish the dog and get a choke chain, and to never let a dog elevate itself above its owner on a sofa. Yours is one of my main links! I also use some of your materials in my homing packs for rescue cavaliers.
Thanks again!

The handouts on behaviour. We have two Havanese dogs the love to greet visitors at the door with loud barks. The younger of the two loves to watch for opportunities to scoot on out the door when it is open.

The younger one also loves to paw at us whenever he wants attention. I am planning on using your techniques to help change behaviour with both dogs.

Do you have any comments?

Now if there was just an article on how to re-train an older dog on going outside to urinate.

DITR is such a great program. We are currently taking our second class and are thrilled with the immediate progress our dogs have made. DITR training help teach us how to make our dogs a very enjoyable part of our lives. No more chewing things they shouldn't, no more 'marking', no more digging, no more jumping up on visitors as soon as they come to the door. DITR makes it very enjoyable and rewarding to work with and teach new behaviors and skills to our dogs. We actually look forward to training sessions and LOVE to take the dogs out for walks.

They are actually getting so well trained with their "manners" that I can take them to work with me and have them sit in my office while I work and have co-workers stop by without worrying if they'll run off, jump on someone, or have an accident.

DITR is the best investment a person can make in their pet!!!!

We have a new puppy male shih tzu 3 months old that is very hyper and has been eating his own "bon-bon's" if you get my drift and info i have found on here for that is great. I also figured out why my lil girl ate the cats "bon-bon's" when we had a cat

I've met your dogs, and it still amazes me, 7 years later, how loving, consistent training can bring out the best in a dog. We're planning on adding a dog to our family within the year, and if there's anything I learned from you guys it's the importance of being the perfect family for your dog, not just finding the perfect dog for your family. Thanks for maintaining such an awsome, accessible resource for dog people.
