I have noticed a growing tendency to omit commas altogether in correspondence, though not in legal documents of course. You'll find numerous ways of representing dates, some with commas, some without: BrE: 2 June, 1980 ~ 2 June 1980 ~ 2nd June 1980 ~ 2nd June, 1980 AmE: June 2, 1980 ~ June 2 1980 ~ June 2nd 1980 ~ June 2nd, 1980 BrE typically differs from AmE as I've shown above. Personally, I prefer the BrE variants since the two numerical fields are separated by the month. PaulM
So there is no "rule" per se. It's very annoying because there is no consistency.
No, there is no single fixed rule. In the US, there are two main style guides that writers and publishers often adhere to: The Chicago Manual of Style and The Associated Press. But they have different recommendations too! Whereabouts do you live? PaulM
Central NY, but I grew up in Denver, CO. I am however, old. I have a degree in Graphic Design, that's why it bugs me.
