There was always a difference betwwen gay and camp in our 'ouse .The original Lacy was as camp as a row of tents on a good night, and so was the music. CJ AND COMPANY-"SURE CAN'T GO TO THE MOON"
Paul, you shock and apaul (sic) me...surely by the time Andrea and her so called 'True' Connection came along, the jig was up in the soul clubs on that end of disco.
Likewise, Boys Town Gang. Beyond the bounds of the pioneering tunes that still hold their own (!) and into that pink area, if you will.
Or am I (prepared to be shocked) A BIT OF SNOB ABOUT THIS?
Basically, do I want to look favourably on music that lived in the Abbaland of 'Dancing Queen'?
humble apologies Mr Webster oh sir, but it took me back to the Central,Central Avenue Gravesend (hall at the back) where may an aspiring DJ floundered or made his mark '74'to '80 on disco not disco. Will "your ex is back in town "... Gladys & her pips count??
Surely not Mark,Andrea True[porno star] with Greg Diamond was 1976,right at the height and i can remember hearing it at The Lacy,Crackers and all those other "camps" at the time.
Back in October 1977,the late Dave Godin [who coined the expression "northern soul"]visited the Lacy Lady in Ilford and promptly declared in Blues & Soul no.236 that "northern soul is dead" and that the Lacy was Englands nearest thing to a soul club in Brooklyn,Detroit or Chicago. What impressed him the most, though was the sexually charged atmosphere and the fact that both gay and straight punters mixed together both on and off the dancefloor. On the night in question,Dave had rushed up to me while I was playing and yelled "Oh Chris! the ambience!! the ambience!!!"
I miss-heard and immediately dispatched Tom to the door to alert security that somebody was hurt and an ambulance was outside.
Later that night Dave then announced that he loved the club and was fascinated by the fact that "all the club goers looked as though they are about to f**k one another"
To which i responded "Thats because they probably are" .
And they probably did.
I know i did.
Mind you,I blame the music.
Lacy Oooo remember it well, 1 of those cut it out & keep reviews "I was there" mind you had to drop the pink shirt, blusher & eyeliner did the locals complain about what use to go on in the car park?
Wake up & be somebody - Brainstorm
