Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Sorting through a load of old videos the other day found in the loft that haven't seen the light of day since i can't remember.
I found an old video including YOUNG SOUL REBELS.
Set around the time of the Queens jubilee year of 1977, despite it's gay overtones, the music is brilliant. The likes of
O'Jays, Roy Ayers, The Blackbyrds, El Coco, Sylvester, Charles Earland, War, Dr Buzzards Original Savannah Band as well as Parliament & Funkadelic.
They mention a lot of clubs including The Lacy Lady and as the film was set in 1977 i was thinking to myself that had to be the best year as regards music. You had the punk scene which was happening and the likes of us lot going down The Lacy. Can remember hearing an interview with David Grant from some BBC radio documentary called from Punk To Present when David stated that more & more punks started to turn up at The Lacy, don't remember that myself but they seem to portray that in the film. Chris sure you will put me straight on that one.
What did make me laugh in the film was when they started to do that line dance to El Coco's Let's Get It Together, blimey Chris there still doing it now at Caister.
Anyway not sure if YOUNG SOUL REBELS is still available or on dvd, but if it is, it's worth watching just for the nostalgia trip.

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Its true Tim,everyone from the Clash,Billy Idol,Siouxsie and the Banshees, the Bromley Contingent, and dozens of the early punks frequented the Lacy. This is well documented in loads of bands biographies including the excellent "PUNK" by Colgrave & Sullivan. In fact THE CLASH played live one thursday night at THe Lacy with THE SUBWAY SECT.
I also met the guys who made YOUNG SOUL REBEL when they were shooting the movie, but I must say it didn't blow me away.....Still that scene when they all dance to EL COCO is very funny.

still available

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

went to the premier of YSL at the screen on the green in islington (early nineties i think)but what a letdown.there still hasnt been (perhaps never will be) a movie that has documented our thing in the last thirty years.mabye we are meant to be deep, deep underground....

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

anyone see thatold docu on the stones the other night. it was done by their own camera man,i think it was a free gig in arazona,it,s the one where the hells angels went crazy and killed someone.

No what you mean as regards Young Soul Rebels being a let down, but you must agree that the music is brilliant. Cos let's face it that year of 1977 down the Lacy Lady has yet to be beat (i'm sure others will differ)
The music seemed so new fresh & exciting from artists like Brass Construction & the like.
You are correct in saying that there hasen't yet been anything documented on film that really shows what has happened over the last thirty or so years. Maybe someone will eventually get it together and put all those clips that you see now and again on various tv series of the clubs we use to frequent back in the day like The Lacy Lady & The Royalty. Come to think of it , think Chris Hill mentioned once that they never ever filmed down the Lacy but would be nice to have it all documented on film.

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Richard the film was Gimme Shelter and the concert was at Altamont racetrack.A lot of people regard that night as the end of the whole hippy peace and love 60's vibe.
Interesting to read Tims thoughts on the tie in between "our scene" and Punk in 76 (and it was definitely 76,not 77).There was a massive crossover from soulboy to Punk at that time,as Chris said you used to see the same old faces everywhere. One night at The Lacy, the next night a Pistols gig at the 100 club(they had a Tuesday night residency in May/Jun 76).Also this seemed to predate Punk. There was a Roxy music concert at Wembley Arena around Christmas 75 (circa "Love is the drug".I remember all the GI uniforms) and it was a serious Who's Who of Future music and Fashion personalities.Looking back,it was like everybody was waiting for something to get involved in.
Also as Chris has said a lot of biographies namecheck the Lacy including Boy George and Johnny Rotten (No Blacks,No Irish,No Dogs)but I cant say I remember seeing them.I remember the 2 concerts there, one week The Clash and Subway Sect, next week The ****ed.Also remember this really tall really skinny guy with sunglasses on in the Lacy one night, propping up the bar, acting super cool.Sir Bob Geldof had graced us with his presence ;-))
Around the same time I went straight from The Lacy to a party in Leytonstone one night, and there were a lot of The Bromley contingent there...Siouxsie,Berlin,Steve Severin,Philip Sallon to name a few.Whether they too had come from The Lacy I couldnt say, although it wouldnt be the furthest they'd have travelled for a night out.
Chris,Siouxsies family home was quite near you,did you know that? And although it seems not much filming was done at The Lacy, has anyone got any footage from the Nationwide "Swing" special.2 of my mates went up to dance on that show.
Thats it,all reminisced out for one night

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

It was the N.M.E. and it was written by Danny Baker, and got a full middle page spread, and resulted in me first having a fight and then a long friendship with Jimmy Pursey of Sham 69.Its a long and funny story.

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Blimey Chris
"Having a fight and then a long friendship with Jimmy (Hersham boys)Pursey." "It's a long and funny story."
I for one would love to hear about it !
Chris I think you should write about your time in the music business. Would make great reading. Or is it already under way ?

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

The book? .....one day, maybe. The Jimmy Pursey story involves Tilbury skinheads, some groupies,Paul Gambaccini,Sir Tim Rice,Muds very last gig(!)and The Boomtown Rats and was one of the maddest 3 days of my life! I must write it down before I forget it.

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Chris
Jimmy Pursey,Tilbury skinheads,Groupies,Paul Gambaccini,Sir Tim Rice, Mud & The Boomtown Rats.
This is getting even more interesting day by day.
When you've jotted it down Chris, you've gotta share it with everyone otherwise it just wouldn't be fair.
Please...........

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

As far as i'm aware i've not suddenly become a film snob, but since Film 4 has gone free-to-air i'm of the opinion that their selection of films have taken a turn for the worse! Last night for example we had "Carry on Dick" followed by "Four weddings & a funeral"...

Not good!!!

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Couldn't agree more. Film 4 has suddenly taken a turn for the worse since becoming free viewing.
Watched a film i hadden't seen before the other day called Love,Honour & Obey which was quite good starring Ray Winstone, Kathy Burke, Jude Law, Sean Pertwee, Sadie Frost and would you believe it Denise Van Outen. A comedy of sorts about ganglands in North & South london. Made me chuckle a bit, worth another watch.

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Hi Harv,

Hope you're well mate!

"Love, Honour & obey" excellent film, some very funny scenes and Ray Winstone on top form! Love the fancy dress ending and Sean Pertwee singing "Fireball XL-5"!
Spud pointed me in the dirction of a film called "Final Cut" has the same cast and is extremely good!!! Has some slightly disturbing moments but well worth a look!

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

spot on tony,i do laugh when they stick on a carry on movie with the premise that its "post modern irony" more like the subs arent comeing in anymore so we can stick on any old tat.

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Three "must see's" on DVD right now.

TSOTSI-Almost the South African version of CITY OF GOD,with more heart.

THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA- Tommy Lee Jones modern day western masterpiece.A bit tricky with all the time/flashback changes, but a second viewing pays off.

SYRIANA-another great political thriller post THE CONSTANT GARDENER,and Georgie boys second great film but you'll need to keep paying full attention to figure out what the **** is going on!!
Confused...yes I was.

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Yee-Haaa !! (Sound effect of spitting & then 'DANG !!' ...)
Just thought I'd drop a post into The Cinematic Thread here & tell ya of a few Westerns I've been watching as we've had a slew of John Wayne films in our shop lately, which I got my grubby little paws on before the paying public. In no particular order, here we go....

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - (James Stewart is great in this too, as is Wayne's line : 'That's MY steak, Valance !!' )

True Grit
Rio Bravo
Rio Lobo
The Sons Of Katie Elder
Big Jake
The Shootist

Some other westerns seen too were Sam Peckinpah's 'Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid' starring James Coburn, Kris Kristofferson & Bob Dylan (!!)

Sergio Leone's wonderful 'Once Upon A Time In The West' with Charles Bronson & Henry Fonda.

The Proposition - I saw this purely because of Ray Winstone who was fine, but I thought it was a little slow, but the luscious photography kept me watching.

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Not yet ,but its on my list of "musts"
Saw a fantastic spanish movie last night,"BETWEEN YOUR LEGS" which mixes PEDRO ALMODOVAR with ALFRED HITCHCOCK by way of BRIAN DE PALMERS "DRESSED TO KILL"..a fantastic thriller but if you don't speak spanish, the subtitles come a little too fast unless you're a speed reader.....still you'll soon get the hang of it....

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Check out the 2 Disc special edition DVD of of "Whatever happened to Baby Jane" a bargain £6.99 including P&P from wwww.play.com, featuring Bette Davis and Joan Crawford at their very best. Amazing considering it's a black and white film made in 1962 - a work of art IMHO.

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Just to line up my ducks from a previous 'Fred' entry...

If you like the going to the pictures experience, get on your pushbikes and track down Idlewild, and sharpish. It being a HBO production, no doubt it will be nestling on a shelf at a Blockbusters near you, and sharpish.

Not got at The Departed myself yet, either. Bit disturbed to see L'il Leo doing Bobby D's bunk bed push ups a la Cape Fear in the trailer - lacking that Max Cady-ish menace, the munchkin does, I would suggest - but Di Caprio may just save his bacon by sporting a blinding new couture Barbour jacket.

Check out their store in Conduit Street, W1, he added even more superficially!

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Yes Paul, really enjoyed The Departed too!
One or two plot points that a second viewing should hopefully iron out, but overall a return to form for Scorsese. Leo's not too bad in this, convinced me of his character's mixed-up-edness by taking some tablets and not shaving! Matt Damon is still providing the goods (can't wait for The Bourne Ultimatum) and when I get the chance to, I'm hoping to parade around work talking to people a la Mark Wahlberg's Dignam,(Scene-stealer or what?!)

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Went to see the Italian ganster epic last night Romanzo Criminale...Very very good ....some good old 70s tunes ..But Ballroom blitz by the sweet sounded great with these italian kids going around wasting people ..quality 152 minnutes flew by ... Go See

Re: THE SOULPRANOS FILM CLUB

Casino Royale is an excellent return to from for the Bond franchise and Daniel Craig IS James Bond!
